The decision in focus

Aircraft age should be reviewed with condition, maintenance exposure, support and expected ownership exit. There is no single public age threshold that establishes every lender’s willingness to finance a jet.

Ask about age now and at maturity

Give the lender the manufacture year, exact model and proposed loan horizon. Ask whether criteria consider the aircraft's age at funding, maturity or both. A shorter maturity can leave more principal due earlier even when the monthly payment is calculated on a longer amortization schedule.

Show condition beyond cosmetic appeal

Provide records continuity, current times and cycles, inspections, engine status, modifications, damage history and expected future work. Have a model-experienced independent adviser assess the evidence. A new paint scheme or cabin can improve appearance without resolving systems obsolescence, maintenance obligations or records gaps.

Investigate support and operating practicality

Ask the operating team about parts, maintenance capability, training, avionics support and regulatory needs for the intended use. Obtain actual quotes or documented support evidence where possible. Avoid blanket claims that an older model is either inexpensive to operate or impossible to finance simply because of its manufacture year.

Stress ownership through a slower exit

Compare acquisition savings with initial work, fixed costs, expected major events and remaining debt. Test longer downtime and marketing periods. A lower purchase price can still require substantial liquidity, so keep contingency outside the down payment and do not assume later upgrades return their full cost at resale.

Illustrative decision worksheet

Illustrative only: two jets share a purchase price, but one has a major calendar event approaching and a shorter proposed loan maturity. Compare the event cash, downtime, payment and balance at the planned sale date. The apparent price match does not make their ownership or financing commitments equivalent.
