Registration, title interests and security documents are related but distinct. Use a qualified title and legal process to identify the aircraft, relevant interests and the evidence needed for the particular closing.
Distinguish registration from title diligence
The FAA explains that its Aircraft Registration Branch does not perform title searches. Arrange the appropriate aircraft-record review with qualified advisers. Do not treat an online registration result as proof that every lien, ownership claim or other interest has been resolved; define the scope and limitations of the work being requested.
Identify the actual collateral
Reconcile aircraft and engine descriptions, serials, parties and the property covered by security documents. Ask whether relevant additional interests or registry work apply. A change of installed engine or ownership party should be communicated to the advisers rather than relying on an old specification copied into new documents.
Plan releases and new interests together
List existing recorded interests, payoff arrangements and required releases separately from the new lender's documents. Assign responsibility and timing for each. An amount sent to a creditor and properly documented discharge of its interest are different steps. Obtain the closing professional's explanation of conditions and evidence instead of assuming funding alone clears the record.
Retain the closing record
Keep executed documents, relevant filing confirmations, payoff and release evidence, and final statements securely. Ask who monitors outstanding post-closing items and how the buyer knows they are complete. If names or descriptions differ, obtain professional correction; do not infer that an administrative filing establishes every legal issue has been decided.
Illustrative decision worksheet
Illustrative only: an aircraft record shows a security agreement while the seller says the loan was paid years ago. Request the appropriate release evidence and title review. A verbal statement or old payment record may be useful context, but should not be treated as the same thing as the discharge evidence required for the new financed closing.
