Resolve findings through the agreed contract process and reliable technical evidence. Repairs, price adjustments, acceptance changes and lender conditions need to stay aligned when the aircraft’s condition differs from expectations.
Define the inspection framework early
Have advisers document scope, access, costs, timing, operating flights, acceptance standards and the treatment of findings. An independent inspection should not become a debate about rules the parties never agreed. AOPA distinguishes pre-purchase diligence from ordinary maintenance inspection; the buyer's technical objectives and the lender's evidence requirements also need clarification.
Separate findings by consequence
Ask the technical team to distinguish airworthiness and operational issues, upcoming maintenance, cosmetic matters, records gaps and optional improvements. Do not let a seller or buyer assign technical significance without qualified input. Use written findings and estimates with their uncertainties rather than one unverified total offered under closing pressure.
Compare remedies with all affected parties
Possible negotiated responses may involve repair, price change, further inspection or another agreed resolution. Counsel should document the actual agreement. A lender may need to reassess condition or value, and insurance or delivery readiness may also change. Do not assume the buyer's acceptance alone satisfies every party whose conditions must be met.
Rebuild the schedule and proceeds
Include repair lead time, inspection availability, renewed estimates, continuing seller carrying costs and changed payoff. Update the closing statement and cash-to-close calculations. If the parties choose to defer work, obtain the required legal, lender and escrow arrangements rather than assuming a casual promise will remain workable after funds and possession change.
Illustrative seller scenario
Illustrative only: a finding initially estimated at $25,000 turns out to require additional inspection before a reliable quote. Compare delaying closing with a documented alternative after advisers and lender review. An arbitrary price reduction may change economics but does not itself establish airworthiness, acceptable collateral condition or the buyer's authority to operate.
