Keep the tax analysis and the decision to finance a cost separate. An aircraft loan does not establish exemption eligibility, and a tax allowance should not disappear because delivery occurs elsewhere.
Build the fact file before selecting an assumption
Give the tax adviser purchase documents, seller status, delivery and first-use plans, anticipated California entry and operations, and ownership structure. California aircraft use-tax treatment can depend on conditions and documentation. Retain the applicable official guidance and adviser analysis; an online budget calculator cannot determine that the buyer qualifies for an exclusion.
Identify the correct tax budget
Use the applicable taxable amount and rate only after their basis is understood. The CDTFA aircraft guide explains relevant purchase-tax matters, including rate location and evidence. Do not generalize a single statewide rate to every aircraft or combine sales/use tax with annual property tax as though they are the same charge.
Ask what financing actually covers
Separate price, taxes, fees and initial work in the request. Ask whether the lender will finance each item and on what valuation or advance basis. If tax is cash-paid, keep it in acquisition liquidity; if expressly financed, include it in principal once. Do not assume a stated loan-to-value includes ancillary costs.
Keep uncertain outcomes visible
Use a conservative tax allowance and a separate adviser-supported case where justified. Show timing and cash needed while an issue remains unresolved. Avoid presenting hoped-for refunds or exemptions as available down-payment funds. Maintain records and follow the actual reporting process regardless of whether a broker collects any amount.
Illustrative decision worksheet
Illustrative only: an assumed taxable amount of $5 million at a user-confirmed illustrative 8% creates a $400,000 allowance before any specifically supported credit. If the lender finances only aircraft price, that allowance remains a cash planning item. The example does not determine rate, taxable base, exemption or the amount legally due.
