Compare payment predictability, reset mechanics and exit plans together. A starting interest rate is only one part of the cost and risk of an aircraft financing structure.
Define what is fixed
Ask whether the rate is fixed through final maturity, for an initial period or only until a stated reset date. Distinguish an indicative quote from a rate commitment. A loan can amortize over a long schedule while its pricing or maturity changes sooner. Record all three dates so a payment calculator uses the right assumptions.
Understand the variable formula
For a floating or resetting offer, request the reference index, spread, reset frequency, observation method, floor, cap and payment treatment. Confirm what happens when the reference changes and whether unpaid interest can arise. Do not assume an index name alone defines the contractual calculation or that the initial payment will remain constant.
Stress rates and remaining balance
Use the same principal, amortization and holding period for both offers. Calculate higher-rate cases at the appropriate reset date using the remaining principal, not the original balance. Show payment, cash interest and balance at exit. A sensitivity exercise demonstrates exposure; it does not forecast future interest rates.
Connect the choice to ownership flexibility
Review prepayment restrictions, refinancing costs, maturity and likely sale timing. A predictable rate may still carry a balloon, while an adjustable loan may have exit provisions that suit a particular plan. Ask what documents govern each feature and compare the complete package rather than selecting on the smallest first payment.
Illustrative decision worksheet
Illustrative only: compare two $4 million loans using identical amortization. For the variable proposal, model the contractual starting rate and hypothetical increases of one and two percentage points at reset. Recalculate on the then-current balance. These are stress cases, not quoted rates, predictions or evidence that either structure is available.
