The decision in focus

Put every fee in one comparison, identifying who receives it, when it is paid and whether it increases principal. Avoid choosing a loan by rate while leaving the cost of obtaining it outside the calculation.

Create a fee register

Request an itemized proposal identifying origination, documentation, valuation, title, legal, filing and other charges that apply to the actual transaction. Separate finance fees from aircraft purchase and operating expenses. Do not assume a generic list is exhaustive or that a fee with the same label has identical scope across two offers.

Assign timing and refund treatment

Record whether each item is paid at application, approval, closing or later, and what happens if the transaction does not complete. Ask who incurs third-party costs and whether a deposit is credited. A small headline closing charge can coexist with earlier nonrefundable payments; both belong in acquisition cash planning.

Count financed fees once

A financed fee increases the principal on which payments are calculated. A cash-paid fee affects upfront cash instead. Do not add the same charge to both principal and cash without an explicit reason. When comparing total expense, show the fee itself and resulting interest through the chosen horizon rather than hiding it in the payment.

Compare cost through the intended exit

Use the same price, equity and holding period for competing offers. Include fees, payments, remaining debt and applicable exit charges. Ask the offer provider to explain any disclosed APR and its included fees. A simple fee-adjusted rate is a different measure and should be compared on its own stated assumptions. A transparent cash-flow comparison is more useful than an unsupported label.

Illustrative decision worksheet

Illustrative only: Offer A finances a $20,000 fee, while Offer B requires the same amount in cash. The first changes loan principal and interest; the second changes acquisition liquidity. Compare both over the same holding period with remaining debt included. Equal fee amounts do not create identical timing or financing costs.
