The people behind the base

FBOs & aviation businesses

Start with the providers’ published locations and the airport’s business directory. Compare written proposals for the exact aircraft and services you need.

The directory is informational. Categories describe published services; no ranking, service guarantee, FAA certificate determination or endorsement is implied. Ask each provider about current capability, availability and contract terms.

The decision in focus

Evaluate Sacramento McClellan Airport as a home base or recurring destination for the actual aircraft, passengers and schedule.

Identify the airport and contractual counterparty

The airport operator identifies Sacramento McClellan as a privately held public-use airport in Sacramento County. Use MCC/KMCC so it is not confused with McClellan-Palomar in Carlsbad. Ask which entity controls the proposed hangar, FBO services and access agreement; private airport ownership does not by itself describe the owner's rights under an individual storage contract.

Compare the northern Sacramento mission

Map the owner's recurring Sacramento-region destinations and compare McClellan with Mather and Executive. Include the crew base, maintenance support and any aircraft repositioning. An on-site amenity or business-park offering may be useful, but it should be confirmed in the actual proposal rather than treated as an included benefit of every aircraft arrangement.

Examine long-term terms

Ask for the storage term, escalation, renewal options, assignment, cancellation and insurance obligations. Confirm aircraft clearances, shared-space handling, towing, power and after-hours services. Determine what happens if the aircraft changes or the owner needs outside maintenance access. A general business-park lease discussion is not a substitute for an aircraft-specific agreement.

Connect the contract to the financing budget

Show base rent, service commitments, movement charges and fuel terms separately from the loan payment. If a longer contract lowers a quoted monthly amount, compare the commitment and termination exposure rather than only the headline price. Retain the actual basing facts for Sacramento County reporting; a privately owned airport is not automatically outside California aircraft taxation.

Build a base-comparison worksheet

Compare MCC with SAC and MHR through a contract-aware worksheet: actual northern Sacramento destinations, provider identity, offered storage, term, renewal, termination, access and positioning. Include whether on-site amenities are promised under the aircraft agreement or merely advertised for the wider business park. Ask who can approve outside maintenance or a replacement aircraft and what happens to deposits at termination. Compare the complete annual service package rather than interpret privately held public-use status as either an advantage or a disadvantage. Keep operational screening independent of the contractual and financial comparison.

Confirm the local reporting and contract roles

Ask the private airport or relevant provider to confirm its authority over the offered space, then obtain Sacramento County assessment guidance from the appropriate adviser. Private ownership of the airport does not, by itself, answer the aircraft's reporting or tax questions. Keep MCC/KMCC distinct from Carlsbad's CRQ in correspondence. If the owner entity changes during acquisition, recheck the contract, lender, insurance and records rather than assume the original permissions automatically transfer.

Compare your basing alternatives

Use this worksheet to request like-for-like evidence for the actual aircraft and recurring trips. Blank or unconfirmed items remain decisions to investigate, not implied airport capabilities.

Your next-step checklist

  • Who controls each contract and access permission?
  • What renewal and assignment rights are actually offered?
  • Are all parties using MCC rather than CRQ?
