How much exit risk can the ownership plan absorb?
Define a realistic holding period
Ask why the owner expects to sell and what could change that timing. Business changes, mission changes, finance maturity and maintenance events can all influence the decision. Use several possible exit dates rather than one convenient assumption. The purchase should remain supportable if selling takes longer than expected. A projected residual value is not a commitment from a future buyer or a substitute for liquidity.
Maintain sale-readiness evidence
Preserve complete maintenance and ownership records, major-work documentation and program status. A buyer will need evidence of what aircraft is being purchased and what obligations remain. Manufacturer program transfer conditions and lender releases should be reviewed before a sale becomes urgent. Do not promise a resale premium from a maintenance program, cabin refresh or upgrade without suitable transaction evidence for the actual aircraft.
Reconcile debt and exit cash
For each potential sale date, calculate the outstanding balance, expected selling expenses and assumed price. Show any amount the owner must contribute if proceeds are insufficient. A loan with low current payments can retain a larger exit balance. Keep income taxes outside the simplified proceeds result unless a professional supplies the amount, because outstanding debt and tax basis are separate concepts.
Test a less favorable market
Run a lower sale-price case and a longer marketing-period case with continuing ownership costs. Do not build automatic appreciation into the baseline. Compare the effects on net proceeds and total holding-period cash. The exercise helps the buyer understand exposure without claiming to forecast future values or selling speed. Update assumptions with independent market evidence as the aircraft and market evolve.
Your next-step checklist
- Choose multiple exit dates.
- Keep records sale-ready.
- Calculate remaining debt.
- Stress price and marketing time.
