The decision in focus

What does a particular aviation dataset actually measure?

Define the population before counting

The FAA registration database describes registered aircraft and related fields. Airport-based-aircraft data and sale inventory answer different questions. A registry count filtered by a California owner address cannot automatically become the number of jets physically based in the state. Explain the field, aircraft categories, status filters, geography and extraction date before publishing a market statistic. Keep the downloadable raw source and transformation method available for review.

Account for ownership structures and privacy

An aircraft may be registered to a leasing entity, trustee or company whose address differs from its actual operating base. FAA also describes a process for withholding certain owner information from public dissemination. Missing or altered public information is not proof of a market exit. Avoid identifying private owners or inferring wealth and availability from registry records simply to make a financing article seem locally specific.

Do not turn registration events into sales

A registration change may reflect an address update, ownership structure or other administrative event. It should not be labeled a completed arm-length sale without additional evidence. Similarly, reserved tail numbers are not a count of operating aircraft. Reconcile categories and duplicates before comparing periods. A database revision can change a count without any corresponding physical movement or change in California customer demand.

Publish useful limits beside the chart

A valuable market page states exactly what its statistic can support and what remains unknown. Use counts as context for the registered population, with dated methodology. Use suitable airport or licensed transaction data for other claims. Do not fabricate California market share, growth or lending demand from a convenient filtered table. If a dataset is unavailable, publish the research method and limitation rather than a made-up number.

Your next-step checklist

  • Define fields and filters.
  • Record extraction date.
  • Separate registrant from base.
  • Avoid inferring sales from updates.
