The decision in focus

How much unguaranteed net revenue is the purchase decision relying on?

Start with permitted use

Confirm that the lender, insurer and responsible aviation professionals approve the proposed charter arrangement. Verify operator and aircraft authorization through appropriate channels. A revenue model cannot make an unapproved arrangement permissible. Keep the owner mission and availability requirements explicit so projected third-party use does not quietly assume that the aircraft can be sold for charter at every time the owner might need it.

Reconcile gross and net cash

Obtain the actual revenue-sharing formula and identify commissions, management fees, fuel, maintenance, repositioning and other deductions. Determine which costs are already included in the owner operating budget to avoid counting them twice. Ask who collects customer payments and when the owner receives funds. A quoted hourly charter price is not automatically an owner revenue rate and should not be entered as net cash contribution.

Use conservative, supported hours

Demand, maintenance, scheduling and cancellations affect actual revenue. Do not promise that a manager will achieve a specific number of hours unless the actual contract contains a relevant obligation, and explain its limitations. Compare no-charter, conservative and manager-estimated scenarios. Identify whether more usage changes future maintenance or resale assumptions. The owner should know how much affordability depends on a source of revenue that may not materialize.

Review tax effects independently

Common-carrier acquisition treatment and federal excise taxes require their own analysis and records. A positive net charter projection does not establish a tax exemption. Ask the accountant how actual income and costs are treated and retain operating support. Reconcile the manager's monthly statements with the forecast so gross revenue growth is not mistaken for improved owner cash flow when related expenses also rise.

Your next-step checklist

  • Confirm approved use.
  • Trace gross-to-net deductions.
  • Model zero revenue.
  • Reconcile monthly statements.
