The decision in focus

Understand what a financing status actually means before making a purchase commitment.

Start with the exact statement

A short website intake collects preliminary facts and contact information; it does not itself issue credit approval. Terms such as prequalified or pre-approved can be used differently by providers. Ask who made the determination, what information was reviewed, whether credit was authorized or obtained, what aircraft assumptions apply and what remains conditional. Use the lender's actual written status rather than a marketing interpretation.

Read any pre-approval conditions

A lender may evaluate the borrower before a final aircraft is selected, but the terms, expiration and remaining requirements are lender-specific. Do not copy another provider's approval duration, rate-lock period or minimum documents into a California Jet Loans promise. Confirm whether a change in price, model, age, use, entity or guarantor requires another review before the buyer commits.

Separate aircraft and closing review

AOPA's process distinguishes underwriting, approval conditions and closing work. The selected aircraft may require acceptable valuation, inspection, title evidence, insurance and documents. A borrower who appears financially suitable is not automatically approved for every aircraft or transaction. The buyer's purchase agreement should account for the actual financing conditions through counsel rather than assume a preliminary status removes funding risk.

Work an illustrative change

Suppose a buyer receives a conditional indication for a $4 million purchase and then chooses a $6 million aircraft through a different ownership entity. The original indication cannot be assumed to cover the changed request. Send the new facts through the authorized financing channel and obtain updated written guidance. This example does not imply that a lender will approve either version or that a particular underwriting method applies.

Know what confirms the next step

A submission confirmation should state that the request was received and explain the review process. A callback request should state that staff will confirm scheduling. Only the authorized lender can provide its actual credit decision and conditions; funding is another milestone. Keep sensitive supporting documents in the appropriate secure channel and never describe an illustrative calculator result as a pre-approval.

Your next-step checklist

  • Identify who issued the status.
  • Read conditions and expiration.
  • Recheck material buyer or aircraft changes.
  • Separate intake, approval and funding.
