Choose new or pre-owned using aircraft-specific evidence and equivalent missions.
Compare the aircraft after required work
Start with the mission and required configuration. A pre-owned jet that needs cabin, avionics or maintenance work should be compared in its expected completed state, including cost and downtime. A new purchase should be compared against its executed specification and actual delivery terms, not every option in a brochure. Have the operator assess both candidates for the intended trips before assigning financial advantages.
Investigate different evidence
For pre-owned aircraft, reconcile records, condition, maintenance events, repairs, program status and installed equipment. For new aircraft, reconcile configuration, staged payments, delivery conditions, warranty and acceptance obligations. Neither path eliminates the need for technical, legal, title, insurance and financing review. Obtain aircraft-specific lender terms; age may affect collateral review, but a general age claim is not an approval policy for every lender.
Work an illustrative upgrade comparison
A fictional used candidate costs $5 million and needs $400,000 of required work, while another used or new alternative is quoted in a ready configuration. Compare $5.4 million plus verified downtime and transaction effects, not only the $5 million headline. If part of the work is optional, show that separately. The illustration does not estimate a real model's refurbishment cost, value or delivery availability.
Model timing and support
Ask when each aircraft is actually available, what capital is committed before delivery and which services begin at handover. Confirm transferable coverage for a pre-owned aircraft directly with providers. Newness does not guarantee zero downtime, and an older aircraft's completed maintenance does not guarantee a cost-free period. Include first-year reserves and a contingency scenario for either choice.
Compare resale assumptions transparently
Use defensible, dated valuation evidence and explicit resale scenarios rather than guaranteed appreciation or depreciation. Keep California delivery and tax treatment separate from an age-based marketing claim. The preferred aircraft is the one whose verified condition, capability, timing and economics fit the buyer's constraints, not automatically the newest or least expensive listing.
Your next-step checklist
- Compare completed configurations.
- Separate required and optional work.
- Obtain actual financing and delivery terms.
- Use documented resale scenarios.
