Choose a structure using complete cash flows, contractual rights and transaction-specific advice.
Compare equivalent aircraft and horizons
Use the same aircraft or an explicitly comparable operating capability, expected utilization and planned holding period. A cash purchase uses capital immediately; a loan creates scheduled debt service and an outstanding balance; a lease has its own payment, use and return or purchase terms. Identify who owns the asset and what rights remain at exit. Do not compare a five-year lease payment with an aircraft's total purchase price without reconciling end values.
Show the actual cash flows
For ownership, include down payment or full cash price, fees, taxes assumed, operating expenses and net sale proceeds after any debt payoff. For leasing, include deposits, fees, payments, maintenance obligations, usage adjustments and verified end-of-term terms. Separate refundable amounts from expense. Ask advisers which risks each party retains, including condition, residual value, early termination and restrictions on use or modification.
Work an illustrative ownership case
Suppose a fictional $5 million aircraft is purchased with $1 million equity and a $4 million loan. At a five-year sale, the owner receives only sale proceeds after selling costs and the actual loan balance, not the entire sale price. Compare that net amount with a cash-purchase case and the verified lease outcome. No resale value, lease availability or borrowing rate is guaranteed by this illustration.
Read the operating structure
A lease label does not decide operational control. The FAA warns that the actual arrangement and provision of crew matter. Have aviation counsel review the proposed structure, and have the insurer and lender confirm permitted use. Personal, business and charter-related arrangements can produce different requirements; do not transplant airline leasing concepts into a private ownership transaction without review.
Keep taxes as a separate verified layer
Have a qualified adviser evaluate federal and California treatment for the actual owner, use and contract. Do not assume a lease eliminates California tax or a financed purchase automatically creates a deduction. First compare the pre-tax cash flows and contractual risks, then show an adviser-supported tax scenario separately. Test earlier exit and lower utilization before selecting a structure.
Your next-step checklist
- Hold aircraft and horizon constant.
- Reconcile ownership equity and loan payoff.
- Read lease-return and termination terms.
- Review operational control and tax treatment separately.
