Calling a jet a business aircraft does not establish every depreciation requirement. The tax analysis must examine actual use, passengers and applicable tests.
Start with actual trips
IRS Publication946 describes special listed-property rules for business aircraft and qualified-business-use tests. An aircraft registered to a company may still carry personal trips or passengers whose treatment differs from other business travelers. The preparer needs the real facts, not only the entity name or a statement that the aircraft supports business. Classify flight legs and passengers using the appropriate method under professional guidance.
Understand that tests serve a purpose
The IRS describes both the more-than-fifty-percent framework and an additional aircraft-specific twenty-five-percent test for accelerated depreciation. Related-party and compensatory use can complicate classification. Do not create a website quiz that infers eligibility from a single self-reported business-use percentage. The reader should leave knowing which information a professional needs and why broad annual estimates can conceal differences among flights.
Document continuing use
Eligible use is not merely a closing-day intention. IRS guidance also describes consequences when the applicable tests fail during the aircraft class life. Organize recurring review of usage rather than treating first-year planning as the end of compliance. Ask the manager or flight department to deliver consistent records before return preparation, while the business purpose of unusual trips and passenger relationships can still be confirmed accurately.
Separate federal and state answers
After the federal analysis, the California preparer must examine state treatment and adjustments. Passing a federal use test does not make every California deduction identical or establish a CDTFA acquisition exclusion. Keep the questions on separate worksheets with their own legal basis and measurement periods. Financing affordability should remain supportable if a proposed accelerated deduction is reduced, deferred or recaptured later.
A practical planning exercise
Practical review: select a mixed-purpose round trip carrying executives and family. Record every leg, passenger, relationship and purpose, then ask the CPA how each is classified. Do not assume that the presence of one business meeting makes all passenger use qualified.
Your next-step checklist
- Identify passengers and purpose.
- Review related-party use.
- Confirm tests with the preparer.
- Monitor use after the first year.
