Establish a defensible offer range and financing contingency.
Classify the evidence
Separate advertised asking prices, price reductions, documented transactions, professional appraisals and lender valuations. Each answers a different question. Record date, aircraft identity, configuration, maintenance status, program coverage and evidence limitations. Avoid converting a small set of public listings into a claim about California-wide values or the price at which aircraft actually sold.
Compare completed ownership states
Ask a qualified valuation adviser to account for the particular aircraft's records, equipment, scheduled events and condition. A lower price with major near-term work is not directly equivalent to a higher price with that work completed. Identify which adjustments are supported and which remain assumptions. A model-year label alone does not establish a consistent price or financeable value.
Work an illustrative collateral gap
For a fictional $5 million agreed price, suppose the lender bases its maximum advance on a $4.7 million collateral value and offers 80% of that value. The resulting loan is $3.76 million, leaving $1.24 million of price equity before other costs. This example does not describe a lender policy. It shows why an assumed 20% down payment on the purchase price may not be enough when the valuation basis differs.
Keep the offer conditional where needed
Have counsel align financing and inspection terms with the purchase agreement. Ask the lender which valuation evidence it requires and whether a change in condition can affect terms. Document the buyer's maximum price, cash requirement and walk-away conditions before negotiating. Update the analysis after inspection and preserve unresolved value questions rather than label a negotiated price as independently verified market value.
Working document to prepare
Prepare a comparable worksheet with evidence type, date, model, serial number if available, configuration, maintenance status, asking or transaction amount and limitations. Add professional adjustments with their supporting basis and avoid invented precision. Show the requested loan and buyer cash under more than one collateral value. Keep the buyer's negotiated price distinct from the lender's valuation basis so the cash requirement remains understandable even if the two differ.
Your next-step checklist
- Label asks and actual sales separately.
- Record comparable configuration and condition.
- Test a lower collateral valuation.
- Align offer conditions with financing review.
