The people behind the base

FBOs & aviation businesses

Start with the providers’ published locations and the airport’s business directory. Compare written proposals for the exact aircraft and services you need.

The directory is informational. Categories describe published services; no ranking, service guarantee, FAA certificate determination or endorsement is implied. Ask each provider about current capability, availability and contract terms.

The decision in focus

Evaluate Palm Springs International Airport as a home base or recurring destination for the actual aircraft, passengers and schedule.

Build a seasonal rather than a single-visit budget

The airport's official leasing resource identifies general-aviation services and directs aircraft-basing inquiries to its FBOs. A useful ownership plan distinguishes annual storage from repeated seasonal visits. Map the months when passengers need the aircraft in the valley, when it will be based elsewhere, and how empty positioning affects the budget. Do not assume a transient welcome means a year-round hangar commitment is available.

Compare the valley's destinations

Palm Springs, Thermal and Bermuda Dunes occupy different positions within the Coachella Valley. Compare the buyer's actual residence, meetings and recurring ground destinations rather than using Palm Springs as a label for the entire region. Request transport quotes around the relevant dates and ask about event-period booking conditions without publishing unsupported congestion or availability promises.

Delegate operational review to the flight team

Ask the operator to evaluate the proposed aircraft and seasonal mission using current official airport information and aircraft documentation. Heat, weather and other operating conditions belong in that professional review; a financing calculator cannot declare a jet suitable for every desert departure. Obtain the current airport and provider requirements rather than inferring an unrestricted operation from commercial schedules.

Document services and California use

Ask for written terms covering storage, ground handling, fuel, after-hours service and cancellation. Separate fixed costs from per-visit expenses. If the aircraft splits time across states or counties, retain actual location and use records for the Riverside County assessment and California tax discussion. A seasonal residence or hangar invoice alone should not be turned into an automatic tax conclusion.

Build a base-comparison worksheet

Prepare a PSP/TRM/UDD worksheet with the actual valley destination, months in use, overnight pattern, event dates, contracted storage, handling and transport. Include one annual-base case and one recurring-visit case if the owner's travel pattern is not settled. Ask providers to distinguish ordinary service, reserved event service and after-hours arrangements in writing. The operator's desert-mission review is a separate eligibility row, not a numeric score invented from runway length. Keep any unavailable or unquoted item visible and do not treat an advertised FBO presence as evidence that the needed space is available.

Confirm the local reporting and contract roles

Ask Riverside County or the aircraft tax adviser what documentation is needed when an owner has both a California desert residence and another home base. City airport administration, FBO services and county assessment are separate roles. Confirm who invoices storage and airport charges, who maintains location records and how correspondence reaches the aircraft owner. A seasonal lease term is not, by itself, a conclusion about acquisition tax or annual aircraft assessment.

Compare your basing alternatives

Use this worksheet to request like-for-like evidence for the actual aircraft and recurring trips. Blank or unconfirmed items remain decisions to investigate, not implied airport capabilities.

Your next-step checklist

  • Is the proposal annual, seasonal or transient?
  • What event-period reservation and cancellation terms apply?
  • How will aircraft location and use be documented across bases?
