The people behind the base

FBOs & aviation businesses

Start with the providers’ published locations and the airport’s business directory. Compare written proposals for the exact aircraft and services you need.

The directory is informational. Categories describe published services; no ranking, service guarantee, FAA certificate determination or endorsement is implied. Ask each provider about current capability, availability and contract terms.

The decision in focus

Evaluate Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport as a home base or recurring destination for the actual aircraft, passengers and schedule.

Use the airport code to avoid identity confusion

The current operator website uses Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport and the OAK identifier. Include KOAK in operational and service correspondence; a Bay Area regional label does not identify San Francisco International Airport. The official general-aviation resource is the starting point for aircraft support and local charges rather than an airline-terminal comparison.

Ask about current airport and provider charges

The operator states that general-aviation landing-fee billing moved to its designated collection service in September 2025. Obtain the current applicable schedule, billing process and any exclusions directly. Compare airport charges with separate FBO handling, parking, fuel and storage charges. A handling quote that omits airport fees should not be presented as the complete cost of a visit.

Evaluate East Bay and cross-bay travel separately

Build a recurring itinerary for Oakland and other East Bay destinations, then model any Peninsula or San Francisco ground transfers separately. Compare Hayward and Concord when relevant to the actual mission. Obtain time-sensitive transport estimates rather than assume a bridge crossing is consistently quick or that a single Bay Area airport is optimal for every passenger.

Keep international and operating arrangements explicit

If international travel is part of the acquisition mission, have the flight team verify current CBP and airport requirements rather than assume that an international name provides automatic clearance. Request current noise information and provider access terms. Retain aircraft-location records and discuss Alameda County assessment questions separately from customs, flight access and California acquisition-tax planning.

Build a base-comparison worksheet

Compare OAK with HWD, CCR and SJC using the owner's actual East Bay and cross-bay destinations, quoted airport charges, separate provider charges, contracted storage and aircraft positioning. Identify the actual passenger entrance and current transport assumptions. For international travel, add a separate verified customs-arrangement row rather than award a blanket advantage from the airport's name. The Port's published billing pathway is a reason to identify who invoices each charge, not a basis for inventing a fee amount. Keep all alternatives subject to the operator's aircraft and mission screening.

Confirm the local reporting and contract roles

Port of Oakland airport administration, private FBO agreements, federal customs arrangements and Alameda County assessment each serve different purposes. Ask the appropriate party to confirm its own requirements and retain the evidence separately. Keep OAK/KOAK on all records to prevent confusion with SFO. If the aircraft is managed from a different county, distinguish that office address from its actual location and use when obtaining aircraft assessment advice.

Compare your basing alternatives

Use this worksheet to request like-for-like evidence for the actual aircraft and recurring trips. Blank or unconfirmed items remain decisions to investigate, not implied airport capabilities.

Your next-step checklist

  • Which airport fees sit outside the FBO proposal?
  • What does the recurring cross-bay itinerary require?
  • Which current CBP arrangements apply to the planned international trip?
