The people behind the base

FBOs & aviation businesses

Start with the providers’ published locations and the airport’s business directory. Compare written proposals for the exact aircraft and services you need.

The directory is informational. Categories describe published services; no ranking, service guarantee, FAA certificate determination or endorsement is implied. Ask each provider about current capability, availability and contract terms.

The decision in focus

Evaluate Monterey Regional Airport as a home base or recurring destination for the actual aircraft, passengers and schedule.

Distinguish a destination from a permanent base

Monterey may be a recurring destination for an aircraft based elsewhere, or a potential home base for a local owner. Those uses require different agreements and budgets. The airport district's general-aviation page lists full-service FBO resources; confirm current provider arrangements directly and request terms tailored to annual storage, seasonal visits or a small number of overnight trips.

Make special dates explicit in the quote

If travel is tied to a meeting, sporting event or other fixed date, provide that date before comparing service proposals. Ask about reservations, cancellation, parking, ground transport and after-hours support. Do not generalize an ordinary-day quote to every event period, and do not invent a claim that space is scarce or available. The provider must state what it is offering.

Separate coastal access from aircraft capability

The flight department should review current airport information, weather and the proposed mission using authoritative resources. A finance resource must not claim that a manufacturer's published range or a photograph at Monterey guarantees the buyer's intended trip. Compare Monterey with other bases only after the operator evaluates aircraft-specific requirements and the real ground destinations.

Carry both fixed and visit-based costs

For a based aircraft, obtain storage, access, towing and service terms. For recurring visits, model handling and parking by trip, then add any empty repositioning. Keep these expenses distinct from loan payments. Maintain records supporting the actual aircraft location and use for the Monterey County assessment discussion; a vacation-property address is not enough to conclude aircraft tax treatment.

Build a base-comparison worksheet

Use an MRY-versus-SBP-versus-SJC worksheet only for trips where those alternatives genuinely serve the owner's destinations and the flight team has screened the aircraft. Compare annual base, recurring visits and date-specific event visits separately. Ask providers for the actual reservation, cancellation, parking and ground-transfer terms for each case. Keep maintenance positioning, alternate travel and service availability visible. Do not treat a directory's full-service label as evidence that every aircraft model or event period is supported. A signed annual space offer and an unconfirmed transient inquiry belong in different evidence categories.

Confirm the local reporting and contract roles

The airport district's administration and provider contacts are distinct from Monterey County aircraft assessment. Ask who controls storage rights, who invoices airport charges and which official records support the actual aircraft-location pattern. If the owner uses Monterey only for visits, avoid describing it as the permanent base without evidence. Obtain the relevant assessor or adviser guidance rather than infer assessment treatment from a vacation residence, annual event attendance or the district's service description.

Compare your basing alternatives

Use this worksheet to request like-for-like evidence for the actual aircraft and recurring trips. Blank or unconfirmed items remain decisions to investigate, not implied airport capabilities.

  • What repositioning assumptions are in the budget?
